Winner’s Mindset to Fitness

A Winner’s Mindset
From the title of this chapter you might assume that a winner’s mindset is something that is reserved for individuals that finish first in a sport’s competition, but you’d be wrong. A winner’s mindset has little to do with where you finish in a race or a fitness competition. Heck, you don’t even have to compete to a have a winner’s mindset.

Winners are not born. They don’t necessarily have a je ne sais qui or an X-factor that allows them to achieve superior levels of fitness. What they do possess is a winner’s mindset. This mindset is what separates those who achieve their goals from those who merely set them. Setting a goal is an important step; however, achieving that goal is much more important.

Okay, at this point you must be asking yourself, “what the heck is a winner’s mindset?” Well I’m glad that you asked because I’m about to tell you.

A winner’s mindset can be characterized in a few different ways:

  • A positive mental attitude
  • An ability to create and adhere to S.M.A.R.T. goals (More on this in Chapter 2.)
  • A strong belief in one’s abilities and talents
  • An ability to remain focused on the long-term, but execute in the present
  • An overwhelming desire to be better tomorrow then you were today, and/or;
  • An ability to execute and deliver

As outlined above, a winner’s mindset is characterized in fairly concrete terms; however, the manifestation of this mental state can be more abstract. To this point, it may be helpful to cite an example of someone that exemplifies the consummate winner’s mindset. The person that readily comes to mind is Michael Jordan. Even if you’re not a sports fan, and I am not, you know that Michael Jordan is a winner. Michael possessed the ability to remain confident in his talents regardless of the score and was able to focus on the long-term (e.g., the playoffs), but also dominate a game at a moment’s notice. He was also a perfectionist in that he was always looking for ways to elevate his game. Here are several of my favorite MJ quotes, which exemplify his winner’s mindset:

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.

If you’re trying to achieve, there will be roadblocks. I’ve had them; everybody has had them. But obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it or work around it.

My attitude is that if you push me towards something that you think is a weakness, then I will turn that perceived weakness into a strength.

I play to win, whether during practice or a real game. And I will not let anything get in the way of me and my competitive enthusiasm to win.

A winner’s mindset is just like a muscle. It has to be exercised on a regular and consistent basis. And just like a muscle, it will become stronger with time. If you’re ready to get started developing your own winner’s mindset then ask yourself a couple of questions:

  • What is prompting your decision to get into shape or to live a healthier lifestyle?
  • How will you feel if you achieve your objective?
  • How deeply do you believe that you can accomplish this goal?
  • What will happen if you fail to achieve your goal?
  • How will you overcome obstacles (i.e., injuries, busy schedules, unhealthy temptations) and other setbacks?
  • What happens after you achieve your goal?

The questions outlined above are intended to spark your thinking. I want you to embrace the idea that you can shape your body to match the vision that you have for yourself. You must believe that you can create a better version of yourself. You must believe that you can overcome any obstacle put before you. You must replace “I can’t” with “I can.”

If you were able to answer each of these questions in detail, then you’re certainly headed in the right direction of developing a winner’s mindset and becoming a fitbody.
